In a mortise and tenon stairway, the stringers are parallel half logs that hold the treads in place. They are fully visible when viewed from the side.
A mortise (hole or space) is cut into the stringers to exacly match the end of each stair tread. The tenon is the part of the stair tread that is inserted into the mortise.
A mortise and tenon joint is one of the oldest proven construction methods. Also, the mortise and tenon joint makes a very neat and a very strong means of joinery.
This style of stair can be shipped fully assembled for easy installation. (View our installation guide to see how easy it is.)
